Lao Cai ranks 2nd in the Northern mountainous region in terms of provincial competitiveness index

On the morning of April 27, the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) announced the annual report of the Provincial Competitiveness Index (PCI) 2021.

The PCI 2021 report built on feedback from 11,312 businesses; in which there are 10,127 private enterprises operating in 63 provinces and cities and 1,185 foreign-invested enterprises operating in 22 localities.

The position of provinces and cities in PCI 2021 report with 100-point scale continued to be evaluated on 10 component indexes: Market entry costs; land access and stability in land use; transparency; time costs; unofficial expenses; dynamism of local government; fair competitive environment; business support services; labor training; legal institutions and security.

According to the report results, Quang Ninh is the leading province in PCI 2021 with a score of 73.02. This is the 5th year in a row that Quang Ninh ranks first in the Provincial Competitiveness Index.

After Quang Ninh, the remaining positions in the top 10 PCI 2021 are respectively: Hai Phong (70.61 points); Dong Thap (70.53 points); Da Nang (70.42 points); Vinh Phuc (69.69 points); Binh Duong (69.61 points); Bac Ninh (69.45 points); Thua Thien Hue (69.24 points); Ba Ria - Vung Tau (69.03 points); Hanoi (68.6 points).

Lao Cai belongs to the group of provinces and cities with good economic management quality.

Lao Cai achieved 64.93 points, in the group of provinces and cities with good economic management quality, ranked 25th out of 63 provinces and cities.

If in particular in the Northern mountainous region, Lao Cai ranked 2nd out of 14 treho provinces reporting PCI 2021 (Phu Tho ranked first in the region with 66.11 points, 20th out of 63 provinces and cities).

Despite a decrease in rankings compared to PCI 2020, some component indexes of PCI Lao Cai in 2021 have improved in scores such as: The government dynamism index reached 6.48 points, increased 1 ,8 points (6.30 points in 2020); the land access index reached 7.23, increased 0.26 points (6.97 points in 2020); legal institutions reached 8.03 points, increased 1.23 points (6.80 points in 2020), etc.

The overall picture of the PCI 2021 report showed that most of the provinces and cities ranked high in the key economic regions of the country, especially the provinces in the Southern key economic region, which reasched high PCI points and upgraded the rank strongly, while most of the northern provinces experienced the reduce.

It is worth noting that Hanoi has dropped 1 place in the Provincial Competitiveness Index 2021 (PCI 2020 - Hanoi ranks 9th with a score of 66.93 points). Compared to PCI 2020, two other municipalities, Ho Chi Minh City and Can Tho, continued to not be in the Top 10 PCI 2021. Can Tho ranked 12th with 68.06 points, while Ho Chi Minh City ranked 14th with 68.06 points.

With the implementation of the 2021-2030 planning with a vision to 2050, promoting decentralization and decentralization, attracting development investment, it is hoped that the PCI index of Lao Cai province will be improved in the near future.
