Import and export via Lao Cai remained positive during the Covid-19 period
The Covid-19 pandemic has significantly affected import and export activities. However, with the synchronous implementation of solutions of the province's functional branches and the business community's efforts, the export-import activities through the Lao Cai border gate are still positive.Turnover in 8 months reached nearly 2 billion USD
Mr. Ha Duc Thuan, Deputy Director of the Provincial Economic Zone Authority, said: Following the policies of the Party, policies, and laws of the State and the direction of the Prime Minister as well as recommendations of the Ministry of Health on Covid-19 epidemic prevention and control, the functional forces at the door Lao Cai border gate has operated actively and responsibly, ensuring the continuous and safe import and export of goods through border gates in the area. As a result, the import-export turnover through the Lao Cai border gate in the eight months of 2020 is still very positive. The export-import balance of Lao Cai is at an export surplus; currently, the export value is twice the import. |

The total value of imported and exported goods through border gates in the province in the first eight months of 2020 reached more than the US $ 1.98 billion, equaling 43.1% of the year plan, down 16.5% period in 2019. The export value reached nearly USD 0.762 billion, equaling 44.8% of the project, down 27.7% over the same period; import value reached more than 0.380 billion USD, equaling 47.6% of the plan, increasing 17.5% over the same period. The cost of other types (temporary import - re-export, import-export ...) reached USD 0.841 billion, equaling 40.1% of the plan, down 15.7% over the same period.
The main export items are agricultural products (dragon fruit, watermelon, mango, cassava), iron ore, phosphorus, peeled wood... Imported goods include Agricultural products (vegetables, tubers, fruits of all kinds), tobacco, fertilizers, chemicals, fabrics, machinery, equipment...
The bright spot in the picture of export-import via Lao Cai in the first months of the year is that the export-import turnover through the international border gate still accounts for a considerable proportion, up to 93% of the total export - export turnover across the area. In which, turnover of goods imports and export through Kim Thanh No. II International Border Gate reached 1.62 billion USD; through international railway border gate, reaching nearly USD 0.225 billion; while the secondary border gates, the opening of customs clearance for goods import and export, arise very little. It shows that the export-import of goods through an official channel is the priority of choice, the right direction of enterprises, creating good efficiency for export-import goods is always stable and sustainable in integration.
Expectations flourish
Under challenging conditions due to epidemics, goods import and export activities have been maintained continuously and safely, showing the fierce entry of functional branches in the province, especially in output initiative and market expansion. Companies still have great expectations at the end of the year, when the epidemics are controlled, the trade between countries will be completely cleared. From the beginning of the year until now, 449 enterprises engaged in exporting and importing goods through Lao Cai's border gates with nearly 21,000 customs declaration forms.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuyet, an employee of Thien Nhuan Textile Co., Ltd (Lao Cai), said. The complicated developments of the epidemic in the first months of the year caused the Chinese side to tighten the quarantine, so its import of garment and textile products to Vietnam decreased significantly compared to the previous year. Preparing for the year-end market, the company plans to import many fabrics for the domestic market from October. The epidemic is being controlled quite well by many countries, so we hope trade between countries will soon return to normal. This import of goods will compensate for the decrease in revenue compared to the previous months.
In 2020, Lao Cai sets an export-import turnover target of 4.6 billion USD. Still, cross-border trade activities for the business community in the first months of the year meet many difficulties due to countries impose border controls, immigration restrictions, close trails, border entrances... to prevent and combat the Covid-19 epidemic. To solve problems and challenges for businesses and facilitate trade, relevant provinces coordinate to establish a fleet of transit vehicles. This driver force serves export-import activities. In transporting goods, the driver team is fully equipped with protective equipment as prescribed. As a result, many equipment, machines, and products for industrial production are imported in time, while Vietnam's agricultural products are also exported to China at a good time.
Although the import and export activities of goods through the border gates in the province have not been completely restored, it is expected that the situation will be improved in the last months of the year. The trading pace will gradually return to the excitement of the previous year.
Mr. Do Truong Giang, Director of the Department of Industry and Trade, said: To strive to reach the highest level of the export-import turnover target of 2020, the Department of Industry and Trade will continue to advise and propose to the Provincial People's Committee on solutions for flexible direction and resolution of problems, arising in import-export activities, border trade, and border-gate economy. To step up the reform of administrative procedures, create a favorable and open business environment to attract potential enterprises to export and import goods through the Lao Cai border gate.
