There is no universal definition of adventure tourism; however, the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) defines it as a trip that includes at least two out of three elements: physical activity, natural environment, and cultural experience.

In 2018, Bat Xat district successfully tested paragliding activities.

Love Waterfall, located in the ecological forest area of Hoang Lien National Park, is regarded as one of Lao Cai's most beautiful waterfalls. The waterfall is a beautiful location that draws tourists to Sapa. With many small waterfalls at the beginning and end of the source, as well as the romantic Vang stream, Love waterfall is ideal for canyoning and climbing. In 2019, the Lao Cai Tourism Information and Promotion Center conducted a survey and put the adventure tourism program climbing Love waterfall on trial. The activity is part of a collaboration program between the province of Lao Cai and the region of Nouvelle Aquitaine (France). The above tourism type has been put into operation after careful surveying, construction of a suitable experience road, and numerous successful tests. Visitors must use special skills while on the tour, which is supervised by professionally trained guides. Visitors are taught how to use the safety equipment, swing techniques, how to walk under the waterfall, and so on.

Mr. Cao Anh Minh, a tourist from Hanoi confided: I once went to Da Lat to join a mountain climbing and waterfall tour. Knowing that Sapa also has this type of tourism, I look forward to experiencing it once, this is an interesting and attractive journey for adventure travelers like me.

One of the most important factors in attracting and retaining tourists is the availability of new and appealing tourism products. The project "Development of culture and tourism; building Sa Pa national key tourist area of international stature in the period 2020-2025" states that Sa Pa will build unique and appealing tourism products, including Sa Pa products - attractive hiking and adventure sports tours; development of tourism products to conquer the peak, including the restoration of the climbing program of Fansipan mountain and the climbing route to conquer Ngu Chi Son. In addition, international tourism products such as paragliding tourism, waterfall climbing, mountain bike racing... are being developed…

Ms. Hoang Thi Vuong, Head of Culture and Information Department of Sa Pa town said: Adventure tourism is not a new form for Sa Pa, but previously this product has not had an effective exploitation plan. In the coming time, with new development plans, Sapa hopes to be known by many tourists from its unique tourism products.

Bat Xat, like Sapa, has a lot of potential for adventure tourism development. The topography of Bat Xat is formed by mountain ranges that gradually increase in the northwest direction. Bat Xat also has roads suitable for adventure tourism, such as mountain biking (Trinh Tuong - Lung Po route, Muong Hum - Y Ty route, Ngai Thau Thuong - Y Ty route...); climbing to conquer the peaks of Pu Ta Leng, Ky Quan San, Nhiu Co San, Lao Than; paragliding in the Muong Hum - Den Thang - Sang Ma Sao area; exploring Ong Chua waterfall, Rong waterfall, Xanh waterfall, Thien Sinh waterfall...; exploring Muong Vi cave, Phin Ngan cave.

Over the years, the People's Committee of Bat Xat district has directed the Culture - Information Department to survey and develop new tourism products to exploit the potentials of the locality as well as create products to meet diverse needs of visitors. From 2017 up to now, Bat Xat has successfully organized mountain climbing tournament to conquer Lao Than peak, bicycle race; survey and test paragliding in 2018, kayaking and camping in 2019…

Bat Xat has developed the project "Development of tourism associated with the conservation and promotion of ethnic minorities' cultural identities in the Bat Xat district in the period 2020-2025" and clearly stated: Adventure tourism will be one of the district's products, features, and strengths. Since then, the district has developed the product "Bat Xat - a paradise of appealing hiking and adventure sports programs" and has invested in the construction of seven trekking routes. Simultaneously, continue to organize cycling races and conquer the tops of Lao Than and Ky Quan San every year; investigate the possibility of organizing a marathon with interesting topics.…

Young people are particularly fond of adventure tourism. However, with the trend of free-lance tourism, there is a phenomenon of tourists going spontaneously, without organization, and not complying with regulations in many adventure tourist destinations. According to Mr. Pham Van Tam, Head of the Bat Xat District Culture and Information Department, the district will improve the management apparatus at various points to respond to risky situations. The district also organizes training and education in tourism skills for people interested in participating in various types of adventure tourism; posts rules at adventure tourist destinations; and completes the application file for recognition of adventure tourist attractions. Furthermore, construction of environmental protection signs and trash cans along the adventure tourism route, as well as requiring tourists and residents to maintain environmental hygiene and handling sanctions when violations are detected.

With the goal of striving to become a locality with many attractive tourism products compared to mountainous provinces, in the period of 2021 - 2025, Lao Cai will build diverse, unique, professional and branded tourism products. Private brand promises to provide visitors a new experience.
