Creating a "push" for commodity agriculture

“In the value chain of commodity production, people can only do half of it to create raw agricultural products (products that have not been preliminarily processed or processed). To add value from agricultural production, there must be primary processing, processing and enterprise participation. Muong Khuong identifies key crops and livestock of each commune, creating conditions for businesses to arrange and build processing factories to create production links," affirmed Mr. Le Ngoc Duong, Chairman of Muong Khuong District People's Committee.

The pineapple processing factory went into operation, contributing to improving the value of Muong Khuong pineapple products.

Muong Khuong district has many kinds of commodity crops of the province with a large area and scale such as bananas, pineapples, tea... Getting rid of the mindset of small and fragmented production, local people have gradually approached production. focus on the process and techniques of the purchasing parties. Commodity crops have brought stable and long-term income for people participating in the production chain.

The first commodity crop of Muong Khuong was tea. In the process of tea production, farmers are directly involved in cultivation, care and collection, resulting in fresh tea buds. Fresh tea buds are purchased and processed by enterprises according to the association contract for product consumption signed annually. To ensure product quality, the production contract will be binding on technical processes, monitoring and supervision of the use of plant protection chemicals and binding on purchasing costs. This production link has formed and promoted effectively over the decades, making a significant contribution to hunger eradication and poverty reduction for people in the tea area.

To ensure fairness in production, increase competitiveness, and increase product value, tea processing enterprises are encouraged to invest in building more factories. In 2020, one more tea factory is invested and built, bringing the total number of enterprises and cooperatives participating in tea production in Muong Khuong to 4 units. The increased competition has helped the price of fresh bud tea sometimes reach 9,000 VND/kg, an increase of 1,000 VND to 2,000 VND/kg. People are also assured of production because output is expanded.

Ms. Tai Thi Hien, Na Ha village, Lung Vai commune shared: With more processing plants, our people have more choices and higher incomes. Previously, there was only one factory in the commune, so there were times when the factory's operating capacity was overloaded, the purchasing had to rotate, leading to overgrown tea.

Not only for tea trees, but also local key crops and livestock are determined to attract the participation of production linkages between enterprises, cooperatives and people. Products such as bananas, pineapples, tangerines, Seng Cu rice, sweet corn, off-season vegetables ... are gradually having the "hands" of enterprises and cooperatives participating in the consumption, some products are preliminarily processed and deep-processed. This is a good news, a "push" for local agricultural production.

Mr. Le Thanh Hoa, Head of Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Muong Khuong district, commented: Attracting enterprises and cooperatives to join in production, consumption and processing of agricultural products is inevitable, contributing to increasing sustainability in commodity agricultural production. More pre-processing and processing factories will increase the value of goods and people will benefit.

In the same direction, over the years, Muong Khuong district has assessed and reviewed the strengths of each commune and town, identified key crops and livestock to have a suitable development direction. In which, the most important thing is that production is associated with consumption, associated with deep processing, which farmers cannot do by themselves but must have enterprises involved.

Mr. Le Ngoc Duong, Chairman of Muong Khuong District People's Committee said: Enterprises play an important role in the organization of goods production. When participating in association with people, businesses can provide technical support, seeds, fertilizers, control the use of pesticides to meet output standards. Enterprises are responsible for linking consumption, regulating seasonality, purchasing all products at a price that ensures harmony between the interests of the parties, state agencies play the role of "arbitrator". Therefore, Muong Khuong district will pay attention to attracting investment, inviting businesses to participate in the production and processing of agricultural products according to each local commodity region.
