Lao Cai people and officials express condolences to former President Tran Duc Luong

On May 24, along with millions of hearts across the country, cadres, party members, soldiers and people of all ethnic groups in Lao Cai province bowed their heads to bid farewell to Mr. Tran Duc Luong, former member of the Politburo, former President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, a staunch communist soldier, a virtuous leader, close to the people, who devoted his whole life to the revolutionary cause of the Party and the People.

 

The funeral of Mr. Tran Duc Luong, following the National Funeral protocol, was solemnly held in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Quang Ngai province. The funeral took place over two days, May 24 and 25. During these days, agencies, units, schools and residential areas in Lao Cai province organized for officials and people to watch the funeral live on television and mass media.

In the solemn atmosphere, Lao Cai people could not hide their emotions when witnessing the image of Mr. Tran Duc Luong for the last time before returning to the motherland. He was a leader who has left many deep impressions in the hearts of the people of the whole country in general and the ethnic minorities in the Northwest highlands in particular.

People of Tien Thang village expressed their condolences over the passing of former President Tran Duc Luong.

In Tien Thang village, Thong Nhat commune (Lao Cai city), cadres, party members and people gathered to watch the entire funeral service at the Party Cell Secretary's house. Watching the funeral live on the morning of May 25, eyes were silent in infinite sorrow for a close, simple, exemplary and devoted leader. Mr. Nguyen Viet Thach, 71 years old, shared: "I will always remember the image of President Tran Duc Luong visiting Lao Cai in 2003. At that time, he was very interested in the lives of ethnic minorities. Now hearing the news of his death, we are sad and mourn the respected leader."

Officers and soldiers of Bat Xat Border Guard Station observed a moment of silence to commemorate the late President Tran Duc Luong.

At Bat Xat Border Guard Station, in the solemn atmosphere of the Fatherland's border, officers and soldiers gathered at the unit's Ho Chi Minh Hall to watch the funeral live on television. Before the funeral, the entire unit observed a minute of silence to commemorate the former President - who always had special affection and attention for the armed forces, especially the soldiers on the front line. Lieutenant Colonel Pham Hong Thi, Political Commissar of Bat Xat Border Guard Station, said: "Former President Tran Duc Luong always emphasized the role of border work in building the national defense posture. The late President's attention was a great source of encouragement for officers and soldiers on the border to successfully complete their assigned tasks. Today, the entire unit was moved and emotional as we bid farewell to former President Tran Duc Luong."

At administrative agencies in the province, even though it was the weekend, officials and civil servants still worked to urgently prepare conditions for the adjustment of administrative boundaries at the provincial and communal levels. They all temporarily put aside their work to take time to follow the funeral and memorial services, expressing their condolences for the passing of former President Tran Duc Luong.

Hang flags at half-mast in public places and agencies, units and offices.

In remote areas such as Simacai, Bac Ha, Muong Khuong... Party committees and authorities of communes and towns have informed people about the time of live broadcast of the National Funeral. Many agencies and units in the area will fly flags at half-mast, organize a moment of silence for officials, civil servants and public employees and watch the funeral live. Cultural and sports activities are all postponed. On local radio, special news and reports on the life and career of former President Tran Duc Luong are broadcast continuously, helping people better understand his great contributions to the revolutionary cause, especially in mountainous areas and ethnic minority areas.

During the term of President Tran Duc Luong (1997 - 2006), Vietnam gradually stabilized and developed, promoted the renovation process, and expanded international relations. Especially with Lao Cai, Mr. Tran Duc Luong, in his capacity as Politburo member, President and before that, Deputy Prime Minister, visited and worked with Lao Cai province many times. He gave close instructions to promote infrastructure development, improve people's lives, encourage socio-economic development programs and investment policies for education, health, transportation, etc., laying the foundation for Lao Cai's remarkable improvement over the past years.

Lao Cai people from urban to rural areas expressed their infinite sorrow, bid farewell to the respected leader, with all their deep gratitude and sincere admiration. The passing of former President Tran Duc Luong is a great loss for our Party, State and People. However, the image of a devoted, simple, close leader, especially his affection for the ethnic minorities in the mountainous areas, will forever remain in the memories of cadres, party members and people of Lao Cai.
