Passion for kites

Kite flying is the traditional folk game. Many people who make kites and play kites often joke that playing kites is the "heavenly" hobby because it is very elaborate, hard work and depends on the weather. However, when it becomes passion, love, being able to fly soul with the kites, listen to the sound of kite flute flying high in the blue sky as if dispelling so much trouble, you will find that this real hobby interesting and attractive.

Members of Lao Cai Flute Kite Club make their own kites by their preferences

Mr. Dinh Cong Sinh, 30 years old (group 3, Pom Han ward, Lao Cai city) has been attached to kite making and flute kite playing for decades. Playing kites, making kites since he was a high school student, he often uses simple, available materials such as bamboo, plastic, etc. to make kites. In recent years, the market for raw materials and accessories for kite hobby has diversified in terms of designs and types, so he turned to using many new materials and accessories for suitability and convenience. Currently, he has 2 kites, including a big 5m wide kite named "moon palace".

To have a satisfactory kite, he consulted, selected the kite model on the internet, then adjusted the size and some details to suit his needs. He selected and ordered carbon composite plastic pipes to cut, bend, install and shape the kite frame. This stage requires the kite maker to be very careful, precise in every little detail because the mistake will affect the quality and shape, causing the kite to fly low or lose balance... Finishing the kite frame, he ordered the fabric to sew to fit the kite to the right size and favorite pattern. Making kites with such materials makes it convenient for players when they can be removed and installed easily, suitable for kite flying trips in remote places.

According to Mr. Sinh, making the kite as desired can only meet half of the requirements of flute kite playing hobby. The other half is the kite flute set. In the past, with simple kites, he often made his own kite flutes from beer bottles and milk cans. However, in order for the flute to be good and resonant, it must be ordered or purchased from professional flute kite makers and artists in some provinces in the Northern Delta. This type of flute, the pipe is made sophisticatedly and carefully from bamboo, wooden flute mouth and decorated with some thin metal pieces on the body of the flute. The types of flute that are preferred and used by kite players are harmonic flute, train whistle flute, horn flute, cow flute,... These flutes cost from several million dong or more depending on sample, number of flutes and crafting materials.

Mr. Sinh is one of 40 members of Lao Cai Flute Kite Club established at the end of 2019, regularly organizing kite flying sessions and flute kite competitions. Club members mainly live in Lao Cai city and Xuan Giao commune, Pho Lu town (Bao Thang). The kites are given their own names, usually based on the shape and color of the kite, such as otter flute kite, wind flute kite, fish tail flute kite, moon flute kite... Most of the members in the club buys raw materials by themselves and according to their preferences and only orders kite flutes. According to the members, it can take several months to complete a kite. Most of the members are in the working age, so they often take advantage of the day off or evening time to work and play flute kite. The club often organizes "off fan" meetings so that people in the club or who share the same interest in playing flute kite participate in kite flying and kite competitions. The most chosen venue is the provincial stadium area (Binh Minh ward, Lao Cai city) or the field, the large area in the villages of Xuan Giao commune (Bao Thang district). Here, the members fly kites together, comment or organize the small contest about beautiful kites, good flutes or "flute" kites... Flying kites and playing flute kites depends a lot on the weather, especially the wind direction, wind power. Kite players must be skillful, guess the wind direction to control the thread, help the kite fly high, fly far, keep balance. If the kite is "full of wind", the flute's sound will be clear and resonant.

The joy of kites.

Not complicated, taking lots of money and effort like kites playing of adults, for children, playing kites is much simpler. With about one hundred thousand dong, parents can easily choose for their children a kite toy set consisting of kite strings and colorful kites at supermarkets or local markets. These kites are made quite simply from small bamboo sticks to create a kite frame, the kite fabric is printed with outstanding colors and favorite motifs. Many families are more careful when choosing bamboo, drying it, carefully sharpening it, then bending it, binding it to create the frame, then covering it with nylon, cutting and gluing the edges to match the kite frame. The finished products are small, beautiful kites with the well-balanced kite frame, which is firmer than a pre-purchased kite.

On summer afternoons, the children would go out to the open ground, run together, fly kites, and shout and laugh together. They lay their backs on the soft grass, raise their eyes to the clear blue sky where there are small kites, fly in the cool wind and talk and discuss which kite flies high, low, which kite is more beautiful or entrusting with the children's dreams to follow flying kites... Children's joy comes from simple and peaceful things like those beautiful little kites.
