The Red Dao, like other Dao branches and ethnic groups in Lao Cai, have unique wedding customs that have been passed down through centuries and have helped them maintain their distinct identity.
Society is constantly evolving. Many ethnic minority' customs have eroded over time. However, the Red Dao people of Lao Cai continue to transmit down their distinctive cultural traits of sacred wedding traditions to future generations.

In the past, the bride's procession was frequently carried out on foot, the groom's and bride's families lived far apart, and the "auspicious" time was often early in the morning, thus the bride's cosmetics was applied from dawn. In a Red Dao wedding, the bride frequently wears traditional garments that are quite elaborate and complicated. The headpiece is the most time-consuming step to complete. Many layers of headscarves are wrapped around the head, with strings and silver bells connected to fend off badluck.

The jewelry on the bride's dress is mainly made of silver.

On the groom's side, the groom is also given traditional wedding attire, a turban, and silver bracelets, preparing for the most important day of his life.

After all of the rituals have been performed, the bride and groom's procession will "depart" from the bride's parents' home. According to Dao custom, the time and date of "departure" are extremely important, giving good fortune to the young couple in their future life. The chosen time must not be the same as the time and date of birth for all family members on both sides.

When the wedding procession reaches 100 meters from the groom's house gate, it will pause to change the bride's dress. According to Dao people's theory, the bride's attire is a traditional hand-embroidered gown that is very beautiful and precious, thus it will quickly become soiled or destroyed when traveling great distances. As a result, when the procession reaches a particular distance from the groom's house, the bride's traditional bridal gown is changed so that she is the most beautiful as she enters her husband's house.

The Red Dao people love bright colors, so pink and red are chosen as the main colors in weddings. The bride and groom's costumes or wedding objects (such as trumpets, umbrellas, etc.) are covered with a red scarf with the hope that luck and happiness will come.

When the bride's party arrives, the groom's party will greet them with trumpets, drums, cymbals, and somber and sacred rites based on Dao tradition. And, according to Dao people's idea, the groom has not yet come out to greet the bride; instead, the leader of the groom's party and party members will greet her.

At the auspicious hour, the bride is brought through the main gate to the groom's house. In the past, the bride's procession would be carried out the previous afternoon, after which the bride and two bridesmaids would set up a temporary house outside the groom's house for one night to hold the "entering the house" ceremony the next morning. Staying overnight near the groom's house was to avoid the case that the bride's party could not arrive in time, or after the auspicious hour for the ceremony. However, nowadays, transportation is more convenient, and people find it costly and cumbersome to carry out, so they have abandoned it and proactively timed their travel between the two houses to be on time for the bride's pick-up and drop-off.

The bride and groom perform the ceremony before the ancestral altar of the groom's family. All rituals are led by a shaman with offerings to the ancestors, praying for the young couple to be prosperous and happy.

The women in the bride's family and the groom's family bring the bride into the young couple's honeymoon room.

The party to wish the young couple good luck is held at the groom's house. In the past, weddings usually took place over 3 days and 3 nights, but now, according to the new lifestyle, families have shortened the wedding time to only 2 days and 1 night.
